Document 33427 SLAVERY: 1861 Signed two days after Jefferson Davis was elected President of the Confederacy. Manuscript DS: "Zo S. Cook/Judge", 2p, 7¾x12. Wilcox County, Alabama, 1861 February 11. An inventory of the estate of Eliza G. England, listing property, including the "Negroes": "Seth...$1550.00/George...1550.00/John...600.00/Franceis...1625.00 and Polly & her child...1625" and two others. This human "property" made up the bulk of the value of the estate; other items listed amounted to only $859.09. A WEEK BEFORE THE ESTATE OF THE LATE ELIZA ENGLAND WAS APPRAISED IN WILCOX COUNTY, MONUMENTAL EVENTS BEGAN TAKING PLACE IN MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA, LESS THAN 60 MILES AWAY. On February 4, 1861, the first meeting of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States of America had been held. Two days later, a Constitution was adopted. On February 9, Jefferson Davis was elected President of the Confederacy. He was inaugurated on February 18, 1861. Folds. Stains touch 11 lines of text front & verso. Overall, fine condition.
