Document 253690 1928: ALFRED E. SMITH (Lost to Hoover) First Roman Catholic major party candidate. Photograph signed: "Alfred E. Smith". Sepia, 7½x9½, mounted on "quality cardboard" of the same size. The Governor of New York (1919-1920, 1923-1928) was nominated for President at the Democratic National Convention held June 26-29, 1928 in Houston. Secretary of Commerce under Harding and Coolidge, Hoover defeated Smith by 21.4 million to 15.0 million popular votes, 444-87 electoral votes and 40-eight states.
