Document 77435 DUESENBERG AUTOMOBILE "The World's Finest Motor Car". Stock Certificate signed: "L.M. Rankin" as President and "Frances A. Reilly" as Secretary of Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Co., Inc., 1p, 12½x8½. No place, but probably Indianapolis, 1921 January 10. Certificate No. 390 registered to Addie J. Carey for 2½ shares in the Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Co., Inc. An early issue of 100,000 shares of Common Stock "without Nominal or Par Value" and "Preferred Stock, 50,000 Shares, Par Value $100 each". Also signed: "W.H. Adams" on verso under blank transfer portion. Signed the year a Duesenberg was the first American automobile to win the Grand Prix in Le Mans, France. Brothers Fred and August Duesenberg established the Duesenberg Automobile and Motors Company in Indianapolis in 1920. Their first car, the Model A, an expensive passenger car, had disappointing sales and was discontinued in 1926. After the company was purchased by industrialist E.L. Cord that year, Fred Duesenberg was installed as Vice President of engineering and charged with developing the ultimate motor car. The Duesenberg line became synonymous with luxury and grandeur. The wealthy snapped up 481 Duesenberg Model J's before the company was sold and dissolved in 1937. Vertical folds touch "R" in "Rankin" and three letters in "Frances".
