Document 17805 BERNARD CORNFELD In a Swiss prison facing business fraud charges, he writes to his friend, cartoonist Al Capp. ALS: "BC" ("Bernie Cornfeld" in text), 2p, 8¼x11½. Prison de Saint-Antoine, Geneva, Switzerland, 1973 May 30. To cartoonist Al Capp. In full: "I was delighted to get your letter. Your (sic) right on one score. I'm Jewish - I don't know how smart I am and I may not be so young when I get out of here. In spite of the gravity of my situation my spirits are unbelievable high. I eat well and carefully - I've lost 6 pounds so far in just over two weeks - I'm feeling fit. I have a full day of work mainly on preparing my case. The judges case is based essentially on the book 'Do you Sincerely Want to be Rich' - I wish I had gotten further on my own book which at least would have been a defense. The system they have here is that they don't have to set bail on matters cases that can be considered criminal by lawyers are not going to request that bail be set until they are sure it can will be granted - so far they haven't even all read 'Do you Sincerely' which the investigating judge read seven times. There are two things you can do to help - first help me find an editor for that part of my book that has already been written. I love the way Max Schulman writes and perhaps he would be willing to work on the book. Also it would be a good idea to read the Bert Cantor book 'The Bernie Cornfeld Story' as well as 'Do You Sincerely' in connection with this. Second you can write me. I can receive any number of letters - but can only send out four a week. Also I'm just allowed one 15 minute visit a week. All my best wishes old friend." Creased. 4, ¼-inch file holes touch some words. With original envelope. Soiled, creased and worn. Cornfeld has penned his last name and address on back flap of the envelope and his full name under the flap. BERNARD CORNFELD had been involved financially with Robert Vesco and was in prison in Geneva facing charges of fraud over the collapse of his Investors Overseas Services. Cornfeld was released on bail of £700,000 in 1974 and was cleared on all charges in 1979. AL CAPP is the famed cartoonist who created L'il Abner, Daisy Mae and the other residents of Dogpatch.
