Document 142506 MARIO SCELBA Settled the Trieste question in 1954. Original Caricature signed: "M. Scelba" as Italian Prime Minister. Color, 8¼x10¼. Drawn from life by caricaturist Jack Rosen who, as head of Security in New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, personally escorted important guests to their rooms, sketched them in the elevator, finished the drawing at home and then got it autographed. On verso, Rosen has written: "Mar. 31-55/Mayor Wagner gave it to him &/They both laughed heartilly (sic)". Scelba served as Prime Minister of Italy from February 10, 1954 to June 22, 1955. After World War II, the Italian city-seaport of Trieste, at the head of the Adriatic Sea, was claimed by Yugoslavia. The United Nations set up the Free Territory of Trieste in 1947. It included the city and a large area surrounding it. Prime Minister Scelba negotiated with Yugoslavia, with the United States and Great Britain present, to settle the question. The city of Trieste and an area to the north came under Italian control, the area south of the city became part of Yugoslavia. Slightly soiled. Fine condition.
