RALPH METCALFE
Olympic athlete and ground-breaking politician.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Best Wishes/To/William J. Luetgr/Sincerely/Ralph H Metcalfe MC/1st District, Ill/6-20-75". B/w, 8x10. Called the "World's Fastest Human" at his peak in 1934-1935, Ralph Metcalfe was a member of the 1932 and 1936 Olympic track teams, winning a gold medal as part of the American 100-meter relay team. Both years, he won silver medals in the 100-meter dash, coming in second to Eddie Tolan and Jesse Owens respectively. After retiring from sports following the 1936 Olympics, Metcalfe began a long political career, first serving as Illinois State Athletic Commissioner (1949-1952). He was also Chicago's Third Ward Committeeman (1952, 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968), an Alderman (elected to four terms in 1955, 1959, 1963 and 1967), President Pro Tempore of the Chicago City Council (1969) and U.S. Congressman from Illinois, serving from 1971 until his death in 1978. The Ralph H. Metcalf Federal Building in Chicago is named in his honor. Fine condition.
