RAMON MAGSAYSAY
President of the Philippines, 1953-1957.
Philatelic Souvenir Sheet signed: "Ramon Magsaysay", 4x3½. Mounted to a sheet of similar size. Issued by the Republic of the Philippines on October 9, 1949, bearing 4-cent, 6-cent and 19-cent Philippine stamps honoring the 75th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, each depicting the U.P.U. monument in Bern, Switzerland. Ramon Magsaysay (1907-1957) was the third President of the Republic of the Philippines from December 30, 1953 until his death in a plane crash on March 17, 1957. From 1942 to 1945, during WWII, he organized and led the guerrilla force that fought the Japanese. As President, Magsaysay was a strong opponent of the Communist-led Huk guerrillas and he reorganized and strengthened the armed forces in a campaign to crush them. Light vertical crease touches 2 letters of signature. Lightly soiled. Irregular edges of mount. Overall, fine condition.
