Document 24169 BERNARD FREYBERG New Zealand commander who saw action at Gallipoli and El Alamein. TLS: "B. Freyberg", 1p, 7½x9½. Moore Barracks, Shorncliffe, Kent, England, 1930 December 23. To autograph collector Rev. Cornelius Greenway, Brooklyn, New York. In full: "Many thanks for your letter of the 3rd December 1930. I regret that as I get so many calls of a similar nature, I cannot accede to your request. Again many thanks for your good wishes." Folds, lightly creased. Staple holes at upper blank left corner. Slight tear at lower right corner, all intact. Overall, fine condition. With original stamped transmittal envelope. Cut open at lower edge. Pencil notes (likely by Greenway) at upper left corner. Born in London, Freyberg went to New Zealand when he was two. During WWI, he saw action at Gallipoli. During WWII, he commanded the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (1939-1945), engaged in Greece, Crete, North Africa and Italy. In 1942, Freyberg was wounded in the neck by a shell splinter but recovered in time to fight in the Second Battle of El Alamein. In May 1945, he led his troops in triumph into Trieste.
