JAMES C. PENNEY. TLS: "J.C. Penney"
as Chairman of the Board of J.C. Penney Company, Inc., 1p, 8½x11. New
York, 1955 December 13. On company letterhead to Mr. Leo J. Sylvor, New
York, thanking him for his letter and card and enclosing his autograph and
reprints of articles and talks (not present). Department store magnate JAMES
CASH PENNEY, who had opened his first store in 1902, had a chain of 34
stores within ten years. In 1913, he incorporated his Golden Rule stores into
J.C. Penney, Inc., which moved its operations to New York City to be closer to
suppliers in 1914. Penney, who semi-retired in 1946, assumed the title of
Honorary Chairman and was still coming into the firm's offices three days a week
at the age of 95. LEO J. SYLVOR was a noted philatelist. Lightly creased.
