     Document 142507

AHMED BEN BELLA
Algeria's first President.
Original Caricature signed: "Ben Bella". Color, 8x10. Drawn from life in black ink with white and pink coloring by caricaturist Jack Rosen, head of Security in New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Rosen personally escorted important guests to their rooms, sketched them in the elevator, finished his drawings at home and had his artwork autographed. Ben Bella most probably signed this while in New York City to address the United Nations as the leader of Algeria. A decorated soldier in the French Army during WWII, Ben Bella was one of the nine original members of the Algerian National Liberation Front. He was imprisoned in France from 1956 until Algeria achieved independence in 1962, when he returned to Algeria to become the nation's first Premier. In 1963, he was Algeria's first President, serving until he was overthrown in 1965 by former ally Houari Boumedienne. Ben Bella was under house arrest until 1980. Creased, ¼-inch vertical tear at bottom blank edge. File nicks at left blank edge. Lightly soiled at lower left blank margin.
