     Document 4791

WILLIAM H. HARRISON
War of 1812: Twelve days before attaining his highest military rank.
Manuscript DS: "Willm Henry Harrison", 1p, 8x5¼. Miami Rapids, 1813 February 18. In full: "Captain William Piatt Deputy Quarter Master Genl will pay to William Oliver twenty eight Dollars ninety cents agreeably to the within account." Light show-through. Horizontal fold which had separated and has been expertly repaired touches letters "W", "llm", "H" and "H" of signature. Lower left corner chipped off. The account is on verso in an unidentified hand: "United States To William Oliver Dr. For four files @ 50c each. 2.00/two small Cord @ 1$ each. 2.00/One Keg eighty three Pound Nail @30c. 24.90/$28.90." Manuscript DS: "William Oliver" at bottom: "Received of Captain William Piatt, Deputy Quarter Master General the above account in full. Duplicate." Twelve days after Harrison ordered payment to Oliver, he was commissioned Major General in chief command of the Army of the Northwest. Later in 1813, Harrison's forces reoccupied Detroit, following Oliver Perry's victory on Lake Erie. Under Harrison's leadership the decisive victory over the British and Indians at the Thames River in Ontario, in which Tecumseh was killed, was won in October 1813, permanently securing the frontier of U.S. territory against the British. He resigned from the Army in 1814 and in the same year oversaw the negotiations for a final peace treaty with the Indians. Light show through. Horizontal fold, which had separated at margins, has been repaired. The fold touches the "W", "llm", "H" and "H" of signature. Lower left corner chipped off. Mounting strips at left and right edges. File note (unknown hand) on verso at upper left blank margin.
