Document 52627
LOUIS PASTEUR and OTHERS. Sheet of "Institut
de France" stationery, 1p, 8½x13. Headed: "Académie Française, Meeting 24
December 1885/Signatures of some members/present". Signed: "L.
Pasteur", "Ernest Benan", "Edouard Pailleron", "E.
Caro", "Jules Simon", "E. Augier", "H. Carnel",
"Camille Doured", "Garson Boissier", "Broglie", "M.
Bertrand", "V. Duruy", "V. Cherbuliez" and
"J. Legouvé". LOUIS PASTEUR had developed curative and
preventive treatment for hydrophobia in man and for rabies in dogs but had never
tested it. On July 6, 1885, five months before signing this sheet, a young boy,
bitten by a rabid dog, was brought to him. Pasteur vaccinated him, the first
person ever to be vaccinated; he survived. On March 1, 1886, Pasteur reported to
the Academy of Sciences that he had treated 350 people, and only one had died of
rabies. A fund was launched to build the Pasteur Institute for the treatment of
rabies and the study of the transmission of disease. Philosopher JULES
SIMON had served as French Prime Minister (1876-77). EDOUARD
PAILLERON was the famed poet and playwright. Poet and dramatist EMILE
AUGIER was noted for his comedies of social satires.
JACQUES-VICTOR-ALBERT, 4TH DUKE OF BROGLIE, served as French Prime
Minister from 1873-74 and in 1877. Geologist MARCEL-ALEXANDRE BERTRAND
developed the theory of orogeny based on the massive folding of the Earth's
crust. Historian VICTOR DURUY, as French Minister of Education (1863-69),
introduced secular secondary education for girls and modern languages and
attempted to establish free compulsory primary education. Swiss novelist
VICTOR CHERBULIEZ had become a naturalized French citizen in 1880.
GABRIEL-JEAN-BAPTISTE-ERNEST-WILFRID LEGOUVÉ was a novelist and
playwright. Creased. Lightly stained. Ink is smudged at the "M" and "B" of
Bertrand's signature. Folds. Light vertical fold touches the "n" of Pailleron,
the "m" of Simon, the "gi" of Augier and the "u" of Doured. Horizontal fold
touches the "g" and "e" of Broglie and the descender of the "n" in Pailleron.
Light spots at the signatures of Doured and Boissier. Overall, fine condition.
