Document 42460 TOMMY BURNS The man Jack Johnson knocked out to become champion. Rare ALS: "Tommy Burns", 1p, 8½x11. Coalinga, California, no date. On letterhead "Tommy Burns/Former World's Heavyweight Boxing Champion" to John J. Smith, Detroit, Mich. In full: "Inclosed find a snap taken the other day. God bless you." Handwritten postscript: "P.S. Inclosed find a couple of pamphlets. T.B." Photo and pamphlets not present. On February 23, 1906, in Los Angeles, Tommy Burns defeated champion Marvin Hart in a 20-round decision to become the World Heavyweight Champion. On December 26, 1908 in Sydney, Australia, Jack Johnson knocked down Burns in the 14th round and the police halted the fight. Johnson was declared the new champion. Lightly creased.
