DOROTHEA L. DIX.
Third Person ANS: "Miss Dix", 1p, 4¼x6¾. To "D.L. Holly Esq." on separated integral leaf. In full: "Miss Dix respects and will be happy to see Mr. Holly at the hour appointed." Dix headed her own school for girls in Boston (1821-1836). After she toured state institutions from 1841-1843, she wrote a report for the Massachusetts State Legislature detailing the inhumane treatment of the insane. Her efforts resulted in reforms in the treatment of the insane in prisons, almshouses and houses of correction in Massachusetts, and were gradually implemented in other states. During the Civil War, Dix served as Superintendent of women nurses in the Army. Irregular left and right edges of note and leaf from being separated and repaired with tape, which is still present. Lightly stained. Wax remnant on leaf with notes on verso (unknown hand). Folds, 1 touches the "D" in Dix. Lightly soiled.
