Document 252445
E.C. SEGAR. Rare TLS: "Segar", 1p,
8½x11. No place, 1938 May 10. To Harold D. Trevillian, Richmond, Va.
In full: "I have your recent request for an autographed original and
greatly regret that, instead of the sketch, I am forced to offer an excuse. Just
recently I returned from the hospital, where I spent several months, and am
obliged to keep my work down to a minimum--only that which will keep Popeye
in the newspapers. I trust that you will understand the situation and not
judge me too severely in the matter." Segar has sketched a cigar before
his name, which is pronounced the same way. The cartoonist, who had
introduced his most famous character, Popeye the sailor, on January 17, 1929,
died on October 13, 1938, five months after writing this letter. Segar
letters mentioning Popeye are extremely desirable. Lightly creased, vertical
fold touches the "e" in Segar. Stained at lower blank right corner. Overall,
fine condition.
