BETTINO RICASOLI and JEAN PLANA. Comprises: (1) ALS:
"Ricasoli" as Prime Minister of Italy, 1p, 5x8¼. Turin, 1861
July 23. In French, not translated. To His Excellency the Minister of the
United States informing him that his luggage has arrived in Genoa. Italy was
proclaimed a kingdom on March 17, 1861. GEORGE P. MARSH had been appointed Envoy
Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Italy by President Lincoln on
March 20, 1861 and presented his credentials on June 23, 1861, just a month
before this letter was written. In 1865, Marsh moved the U.S. Legation from
Turin to Florence and, in 1871, to Rome. Minister Marsh died at Vallombrosa,
Italy, in 1882. BETTINO RICASOLI (1809-1880) had served as Governor
General of Tuscany (1860-1861) before becoming Italy's Prime Minister (June
6, 1861 to March 4, 1862 and June 17, 1866 to April 11, 1867). (2) GIOVANNI
PLANA (1781-1864). On verso, an ALS: "Jean Plana", 5¼x8¼. [Turin],
1861 November 2. In French, not translated. Written to Mr. Mous about a
payment he has forgotten. Elected to the Royal Society of London (1827),
PLANA obtained a chair in astronomy in Turin in 1811. Both affixed to a
6½x9¼ sheet. Both are rippled and are stained in blank areas from being glued to
the sheet. Two items.
