Document 100614 HARRY RUBY After his partner, lyricist Bert Kalmar died, he wrote the words and the music. TLS: "Harry", 1p, 6½x5½. Beverly Hills, 1960 August 4. To Henry. In full: "Your letter of July 29th redevied (sic, received). I would like very much to co-right (sic, co-write) songs with you if, that is, I were writing with others, as I used to do. But since the passing of my partner, Bert Kalmar, I have done words and music - and it has worked out better for me thst (sic, that) way - in many ways. Thank you for thinking of me. And my best wishes for your continued success if (sic, in) the writing field." RUBY wrote the music and KALMAR the lyrics for popular songs that included "Three Little Words", "I Wanna Be Loved By You" and "Who's Sorry Now?" Perhaps Kalmar and Ruby's best-remembered song was "Hooray For Captain Spaulding", which they wrote for the 1928 Marx Brothers musical, Animal Crackers. It would forever after serve as Groucho's theme song. They also wrote for Marx Brothers films Horse Feathers, Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera and A Night in Casablanca.
