Document 34444
CARTER GLASS. TLS: "Carter Glass" as U.S. Senator,
1p, 8x10½. On Senate stationery as Chairman of the Committee on
Appropriations, but written from Lynchburg, Virginia, 1936 August 10. To
Mr. S.J. Woolf, The Times, New York City, telling him of "the
satisfaction I experienced in noting your drawing of me and particularly the
accompanying article...it was so much more accurate than the average newspaper
statement of my views and my attitude toward the existing administration at
Washington...." Trained at the New York Art Students' League, SAMUEL J.
WOOLF (1880-1948) worked for "The New York Times" before joining "Time"
magazine in 1924. In his portraits, he captured his subjects as they looked, not
as they wished to look. Wilson's Secretary of the Treasury (1918-1920),
Glass, a Democrat, declined FDR's appointment as Secretary of the
Treasury. He represented Virginia in the U.S. Senate from 1920 until his death
in 1946 at the age of 88. Folds, horizontal fold touches signature. Lightly
creased, paper clip impression at upper left, file nicks at left edge.
