Document 30377 MIN YONG IK Korean Minister writes to General Hancock after their meeting. Manuscript LS: "Min Yong Ik" in Korean, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Corean (sic) Special Mission, Washington, 1883 October 1. To General Winfield Scott Hancock, Commanding at Governor's Island (New York). Written in English, in full: "I wish to thank you for the pleasure my visit to Governor's Island gave me and for the hospitality, which in spite of your illness, you were kind enough to show me. I sincerely trust that you may soon be restored to perfect health." Docketed on verso (unknown hand). On September 18, 1883, Min Yong Ik presented his credentials as first Minister of Korea to the United States to President Chester A. Arthur. Earlier in 1883, the United States and Korea had signed a Treaty of Peace and Amity and Commerce and Navigation. GENERAL HANCOCK was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for President in 1880, losing to Republican James A. Garfield. Lightly creased and soiled.
