Document 24474 LEONARD WOOD Formed the Rough Riders with Theodore Roosevelt. Bookplate signed: "Leonard Wood", 3x4. After Wood and Theodore Roosevelt raised and organized the Rough Riders, Wood commanded the regiment in the Battle of Las Guásimas, Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Commissioned a Brigadier General in 1898, he was Military Governor of Cuba from 1899-1902. As Major General, Wood commanded U.S. forces in the Philippines (1906-1908) before serving as Chief of Staff, U.S. Army (1910-1914). At the 1920 Republican National Convention in Chicago, Wood led on the first ballot for the presidential nomination, finishing second on the tenth and final ballot that gave the nomination to Warren G.
