NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER
"It is that love that gives the courage - supported by faith & belief - to carry on in the face [of] odds which seem pretty big at times."
Rare ALS:
"Nelson A. Rockefeller" as Governor of New York, 6p, 5¼x7½, front and verso. Executive Mansion, Albany, Tuesday, no date. To Jeanadale. In full: "Please forgive the unbelievable delay in answering your truly thoughtful and understanding letter to Happy which unfortunately got misplaced in the excitement of our trip to Venezuela, and has only just now turned up. Your reaching out a friendly hand as you did, meant a great deal to both of us. Since you you wrote we have experienced very much the same reaction experienced by you & Ken. We have often thought of you both and admired your honesty forthrightness & courage. Certainly there is no greater test of true love. But it is that love that gives the courage - supported by faith & belief - to carry on in the face [of] odds which seem pretty big at times. You were indeed generous to have to have shared with us as you did. Our experience has been as yours that 'without bitterness or regret, we have found out love of people & opportunity to serve them even greater now as a result.' Happy joins in many many thanks to you & Ken for your friendship and understanding. We look forward to seeing you both soon." Rockefeller was Governor of New York from 1959-1973. He had married Mary Todhunter Clark in 1930 and had three sons and two daughters. After the couple divorced in 1962, he married Margaretta "Happy" Fitler Murphy in 1963. They had two sons. This letter may have been written shortly after Governor Rockefeller's second marriage. His divorce and remarriage a year later were criticized by some, and it is possible Jeanadale and Ken were also in a second marriage. When President Nixon resigned in 1974, President Ford chose Rockefeller to be Vice President. Rockefeller served from 1974-1977, not seeking the post in 1976. Staple holes at top of all three pages, none affecting text. Tiny stains touch two words. Overall, fine condition.
