Document 225073 GARNET J. WOLSELEY Before leaving for Khartoum to relieve Chinese Gordon, he thanks a British composer. Third Person ALS: "Lord Wolseley", 1p, 4½x7¼. War Office (London), 1884 March 8. To Isidore de Lara. In full: "Lord Wolseley presents his compliments to Mr. Isadore (sic) de Lara and is extremely obliged to him for the copy of the song, 'only a song', he has been so good as to send him." WOLSELEY fought in the Crimean War and commanded in the Ashanti War (1873-74) and in the latter stages of the Zulu War (1879-80). His Egyptian campaign (1882) culminated in the victory of Tel-el-Kebir, but his Nile expedition (1884-1885) was too late to relieve Chinese Gordon at Khartoum. Wolseley was Commander in Chief of the British Army from 1895 to 1899. ISIDORE DE LARA (1858-1935) was the pen name of Isidore Cohen, British singer, concert organizer and composer of operas in English and French. Folds, not at signature. Lightly soiled and creased.
