Document 254321 NATHAN F. TWINING In command of the 20th Air Force when Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed. Photograph signed: "Nathan F. Twining/General USAF (Ret)". B/w, 8x10. Twining became Chief of Staff of Army forces in the South Pacific in August 1942. In January 1943, he was named Commander of the 13th Air Force, with headquarters on New Caledonia. His assignment was to provide air support for operations in the area, including the occupation of Guadalcanal, the Middle Solomons, Munda and Bougainville. In January 1944, he was transferred to command of the 15th Air Force, also taking command of the Allied Strategic Air Forces, Mediterranean. In August 1945, General Twining was put in command of the 20th Air Force in the Pacific, which bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945. He was Chief of Staff of the Air Force (1953-1957) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1957-1960). Lightly creased at upper blank corners, else fine condition.
