Document 178460
JASCHA HEIFETZ
The master violinist writes about his stamp collection.
TLS: "Jascha", 1p, 7x10. Beverly Hills, 1958 March 14. To
Eddie. In full: "Our notes evidently crossed because the next day
another envelope from you arrived with Ghana covers-DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, etc.
Frances also very pleased with the UPU items, and thanks you
very much also. It would be very interesting to have an imperforate block of
Wieniaski. I do not collect UPU First Day Covers, although I have quite a
few odds and ends (straight, inverted, sidewise, etc.). Steinway's sale was
called to my attention sometime ago, and it is a pity it was sold as one
lot-which made it tough for some collectors to bid on. We expect to be in
New York a few days before the Telephone Hour, and if all goes well may have
about a week or so. Many thanks again and cordial greetings to you both. P.S.
Special appreciation for the double Italian surcharge, and did you notice that
the first Ghana Anniversary FDC (with the picture of the Library) has an
error in the date?" Heifetz has crossed out one word, added a word
and a dash and underlined two words. He has marked two of the corrected
sentences with an asterisk (*). Handwritten addition (signed "J")
explains sentences with corrections: "*Please excuse the Serial
Jitters". The show "Telephone Hour", refers to the critically acclaimed
musical TV show, The Bell Telephone Hour (1959-1968). Heifetz is
universally regarded as the greatest violinist of the 20th century. After
great success as a child prodigy in Europe, at the age of 16, Heifetz immigrated
to the United States (1917). He became an even greater artist in his mature
years, combining brilliantly reasoned, tranquil interpretation with unsurpassed
virtuoso technique. Heifetz arranged a number of works for the violin and
commissioned several concertos from contemporary composers. Items from
Heifetz' stamp collection were sold at auction after his death in 1987. Part
of his collection can be seen at the Cardinal Spellman Museum of Stamps &
Postal History at Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts. Folds, horizontal fold
underlines signature. Fine condition.
