     Document 22333

CHARLES EASTLAKE. Signature: "I am, Sir,/Your obedient Servant/C.L. Eastlake", 1p, 3x1½, cut from letter. Charles Lock Eastlake, a British art critic and Secretary of the Royal Institute of British Architects, popularized William Morris' ideas in Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery and other Details (1868). Eastlake advocated a return to simple, straight-line designs and a single cohesive style in home decorating, and his call for handcrafted, solid wood furniture with rectangular joinery launched the Arts & Crafts Movement in the U.S. Slightly soiled from light show through of glue on verso. Fine condition.
