DANIEL BEARD. Autograph Manuscript signed: "Dan Beard" in pencil, 2p, 8x10½. The artist's explanation of a caricature, incorporating four original sketches. In full: "Any Illustration that expresses a political social or religious idea may be a cartoon but it is not necessarily a caricature. A caricature exagerates (sic) the peculiarities of an object thus this is a character [drawing of head] or this [drawing of stork] and this is a caricature [exaggerated drawing of head] and this [exaggerated drawing of stork]. But these are not cartoons although they may be used in a cartoon - over - A character sketch portrays the salient points a caricature sketch exagerates (sic) the salient points or pecucliarities (sic) so as to retain the likeness but look absurd. A cartoon portrays the salient points of a situation, political religious or social and this may be done with or with out (sic) caricature. In my small cartoons in the Cosmopolitan I seldom use caricature but in 'Puck' and "Judge' the two are almost invaribly (sic) combined. Hastily yours". Postscript initialed "DB": "Frequently in 'Life' there are cartoons with out (sic) caraciture (sic)". Dated (unknown hand): "5-10-[18]94". Beard (1850-1941) was a successful illustrator for many national magazines and had illustrated the first edition of Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Beard, who also wrote and illustrated a number of books and articles on woodcraft and nature study, was involved in boys' organizations. He founded the Sons of Daniel Boone and co-founded the American Boy Scout movement (started in England by Lord Baden-Powell, who was also an illustrator). Beard "Americanized" the Boy Scout emblem by adding an American eagle and shield. Beard's letters are not common, and those incorporating drawings are especially desirable. Folds, vertical fold touches the flourish of the "d" in Beard. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper right corner of first page. Fine condition.
