IAN DOUGLAS SMITH. Photograph inscribed and
signed: "To Evan/I. Douglas Smith". B/w, 3½x5½ overall, image 3x4½ (one
surface). On verso is an ANS: "I send you my best wishes for the Special
Olympics & compliment you for your dedication & courage. I. Douglas
Smith". The African colony of Southern Rhodesia, headed by Prime Minister
Ian Douglas Smith, declared its independence from Great Britain as Rhodesia on
November 11, 1965. The only other country to declare its independence from Great
Britain was its American colonies in 1776. The Republic of Rhodesia was
proclaimed on March 2, 1970. Smith continued as Prime Minister until June 1,
1979, when Rhodesia became Zimbabwe Rhodesia, turning the white minority
government over to the Black majority. Ink smudged at "v" in inscription and
flourish of the "h" in Smith. Fine condition.
