     Document 225151

IAN DOUGLAS SMITH. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Evan/I. Douglas Smith". B/w, 3½x5½ overall, image 3x4½ (one surface). On verso is an ANS: "I send you my best wishes for the Special Olympics & compliment you for your dedication & courage. I. Douglas Smith". The African colony of Southern Rhodesia, headed by Prime Minister Ian Douglas Smith, declared its independence from Great Britain as Rhodesia on November 11, 1965. The only other country to declare its independence from Great Britain was its American colonies in 1776. The Republic of Rhodesia was proclaimed on March 2, 1970. Smith continued as Prime Minister until June 1, 1979, when Rhodesia became Zimbabwe Rhodesia, turning the white minority government over to the Black majority. Ink smudged at "v" in inscription and flourish of the "h" in Smith. Fine condition.
