Document 176532
JIMMIE LUNCEFORD. Photograph inscribed and signed:
"To/Ed/Sincerely/Jimmy Lunceford/1-5-38". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7¼x9
(one surface). Publicity photo captioned at lower margin. Jimmie Lunceford, who
could play a number of instruments, found fame as a bandleader rather than a
musician. His Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra, formed in 1928, gained fame for its
arrangements (especially those by Sy Oliver) and for the use of glee-club
vocalists. Hits recorded include "Rhythm is Our Business", "Swanee River", "My
Blue Heaven", "Ain't She Sweet", "Uptown Blues" and "Lunceford Special". Lightly
soiled, 2, 2½-inch vertical creases at foreground, left of writing. Overall,
fine condition.
