     Document 14205

AMERICAN EXPRESS. Stock Certificate signed: "Henry Wells" as President, "Wm E. Fargo" as Vice President and "Alex Holland" as Treasurer of the American Express Company, 1p, 12¼x3¾. New York, 1865 October 31. Certificate No. 2351 registered to Henry Nottingham of Cleveland, Ohio for one share in the American Express Company. This certificate was part of the recapitalization of one million dollars (each share was $500) after the original company, formed in 1850, was disbanded by law in 1860. The company was founded by Wells, Fargo and John Butterfield, Holland's father-in-law. The pioneer service transported valuables, currency, mail and commodities across the country and expanded to banking and tourism after 1869. Vignette of a train, horse and wagon and a ship at top, with a dog in the top center encircled by 13 stars and the slogan "Safety and Dispatch". Stained, affecting signatures. Folds, vertical folds touch the "W" in Wells and the "n" in Holland. 3-inch narrow remnant touches 10 words. Lightly rippled, else fine.
