AMERICAN EXPRESS. Stock Certificate
signed: "Henry Wells" as President, "Wm E. Fargo" as
Vice President and "Alex Holland" as Treasurer of the American
Express Company, 1p, 12¼x3¾. New York, 1865
October 31. Certificate No. 2351 registered to Henry Nottingham of Cleveland,
Ohio for one share in the American Express Company. This certificate was
part of the recapitalization of one million dollars (each share was $500) after
the original company, formed in 1850, was disbanded by law in 1860. The
company was founded by Wells, Fargo and John Butterfield, Holland's
father-in-law. The pioneer service transported valuables, currency, mail and
commodities across the country and expanded to banking and tourism after 1869.
Vignette of a train, horse and wagon and a ship at top, with a dog in the top
center encircled by 13 stars and the slogan "Safety and Dispatch".
Stained, affecting signatures. Folds, vertical folds touch
the "W" in Wells and the "n" in Holland.
3-inch narrow remnant touches 10 words. Lightly
rippled, else fine.
