Document 156289 [POPE PIUS VI] Document issued during his reign as Pope. Manuscript Document in Latin, not signed by the Pope but issued in his name and signed by papal officials, 1p, 15x23. On vellum. Rome, 1797 February 9. Not translated. Regarding the administration of an estate. Large metal seal of "Pius Papa VI" attached with twine at bottom. An Italian named G. Angelo Cardinal Braschi became Pope Pius VI in 1775. Early in his reign he was faced with the attempts of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II to "reform" the church by suppressing monasteries, assuming rights of appointment of clergy and making other changes. After the Revolution, the French tried to set up a state church by the Civil Constitution of the Clergy (1790). Pius condemned this new Gallican church and forbade the clergy to take the oaths. The French then annexed the papal property at Avignon and Venaissin. The Pope protested King Louis XVI's execution and sided with the anti-French coalition. In 1796, Napoléon conquered the Papal States. In 1797, the year of this document, a treaty at Tolentino ceded Avignon, Venaissin, Ferrara, Bologna and the Romagna to the French, along with a huge indemnity and many treasures. The Pope was taken to Siena, then to Florence. Though he was ill and feeble, the French took him to Turin and then Grenoble. Pope Pius VI died at the age of 82 at Valence in 1799. His body was taken to Rome in 1802. Heavy folds and yellowed. Wear at mid-horizontal fold touches text. Pinhead-size holes in left blank margin (not touching any writing) and right margin, touching end of text lines. 2 nailhead-size holes in last line of text, affecting 2 words. Pinhead-size holes also touch several words. Vertical yellow stain affects some signatures and numerous lines of text. Worn, nicked edges. 4½x1½ blank corner at lower left missing. Fabulous metal medallion seal. SEE IF DOCUMENT 156289 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
