Document 226827 LENA HORNE and BILLY ECKSTEIN Two legendary performers in concert. Program signed: "Hello/Lena Horne" and "Billy Eckstein", 8p, 5½x8½. Circle Star Theatre, San Carlos, California, 1973 May. Titled: "Lena Horne and Billy Eckstein" on the cover picturing them. LENA HORNE, who began her career in the chorus at Harlem's Cotton Club, rose to stardom in nightclubs as a singer of blues and ballads. She became the first Black performer to sign a long-term contract with a major Hollywood studio (MGM), but she was carefully cast in musicals in which her parts could be cut out so the film could be shown in southern markets. BILLY ECKSTEIN, a ballad singer and jazz band leader, had a string of hits in the 1940s and 1950s. His legendary jazz orchestra included such bebop innovators as Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Sarah Vaughn. Creases and folds at signatures, else in fine condition.
