     Document 159420

KING EDWARD VII and HERBERT J. GLADSTONE
The King approves Gladstone's request to award 113 Imperial Service Medals.
Third Person ALS: "Mr. Secretary Gladstone", 1p, 7½x9½. Whitehall, 1909 December 27. To King Edward VII. In full: "Mr. Secretary Gladstone with his humble duty to Your Majesty, has the honour to submit the accompanying list of 113 retired members of Your Majesty's Home Civil Service, not being eligible for the distinction of the Imperial Service Orders, he recommends the award of the Imperial Service Orders." The last word, "Orders", has been crossed out and corrected in pencil to: "Medal". Approved at the top by the King: "Appd/ER". GLADSTONE, son of Victoria's Prime Minister, was Home Secretary from 1905-1909. His influence in the advancement of welfare legislation was seen in bills providing workmen's compensation (1906) and an eight-hour day for miners (1908). Gladstone was created Viscount in 1910 and was the first Governor-General and High Commissioner for South Africa (1910-1914). ALBERT EDWARD, PRINCE OF WALES, was 59 when his mother, Queen Victoria, died on January 22, 1901. His reign lasted nine years. King Edward VII died on May 6, 1910, four and a half months after approving Gladstone's request. "JAN." written in an unknown hand in upper right corner. Folds, none touch signatures. Lightly creased. Lightly soiled, rust paper clip stains in upper blank margin, faint circular outline at lower right blank margin.
