Document 101558 JOSEPH JOACHIM Great violinist who studied under Mendelssohn and performed with Brahms. Carte-de-Visite Photograph Mount signed: "Joseph Joachim". Sepia, 2¼x3¾ overall, image 2x3¼ (two surfaces). Penned at the top in unknown hand, in part: "Debut 1844-M. reunion..." From 1841 to 1843, violinist Joseph Joachim (1831-1907) studied in Vienna. In 1843, at the age of 12, in Leipzig, he took instruction under the German composer, Felix Mendelssohn. He later formed a friendship with Brahms, who acted as his accompanist. Joachim was the first major virtuoso performer whose repertory included many works of other composers, both past and contemporary, and was not restricted to his own compositions.
