Document 159339 WARD BOND Wagon Train's trailmaster. Photograph signed: "Best Wishes/Ward Bond". Sepia, 4¾x6¾. Ward Bond (1903-1960) was a football player at the University of Southern California when, in 1928, the entire USC team, including teammate and lifelong chum John Wayne, was hired for extra work in the silent film Salute (1928), directed by John Ford. Bond continued in the movies with bit parts through the 1930s. In 1939, he portrayed Tom, a Yankee Captain, in Gone With the Wind and the murderer John Palmer "Jack" Cass in Young Mr. Lincoln, but a starring role in John Ford's Wagonmaster in 1950 led, indirectly, to Bond's most lasting professional achievement: his continuing part as trailmaster Seth Adams on the extremely popular NBC TV western, Wagon Train. Bond exerted considerable creative control over the series from its 1957 debut onward. Wagon Train was still NBC's #1 series when, in 1960, the 57-year-old Bond unexpectedly died of a heart attack. Lightly creased in upper right blank corner, minor surface scratch near left shoulder (not visible head on). Fine condition. SEE IF DOCUMENT 159339 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
