Document 17727 THE LEADERS: ELLSWORTH BUNKER U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam (1967-1973) writes that "Vietnam posed the singularly most difficult challenge" in his diplomatic career. TLS: "Ellsworth Bunker" as Ambassador at Large, 1p, 7x9. Department of State, Washington, 1975 January 28. To Edward N. Bomsey, Attorney-at-Law, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In full: "Thank you for your kind letter of December 17, 1974. I fear that I find your inquiry as to my most gratifying diplomatic experience nearly impossible to answer for all of my assignments were as interesting as they were differing. Certainly Vietnam posed the singularly most difficult challenge. I confess also to having derived particular satisfaction from the West New Guinea negotiation and the Dominican Republic settlement. While I have not yet found time to seriously contemplate the writing of books or memoirs, I am happy to respond to your request for an autograph." In 1963, Bunker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Special Distinction by President Johnson "for extraordinary leadership and diplomatic service under arduous and taxing circumstances". In 1967, for the first time, a second Presidential Medal of Freedom with Special Distinction was presented to him. From his second award: "In particular it recognizes the rock-like devotion to duty which led Ambassador Bunker to accept the most difficult and demanding present position in the United States Diplomatic Service overseas, that of Ambassador to the Republic of Vietnam, at the age of nearly 73. In that position, Ambassador Bunker has once again demonstrated extraordinary diplomatic skill, as well as deep sympathy and understanding for the aspirations and efforts of the people and Government of South Vietnam. His quiet and effective leadership of all American activities in Vietnam have made an immeasurable contribution to the progress of our efforts to assist that country to determine its own future without external interference. Through this award, a grateful nation once again pays tribute to one of its most distinguished citizens and public servants." Fine condition. SEE IF DOCUMENT 17727 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
