Document 54791 KING HENRY III Requests peaceful passage for a friend who is traveling to execute an edict of peace. Manuscript LS: "Henry" as King of France, 1p, 8½x12. Paris, 1578 March 23. In Old French, not completely translated. To "Our Dear and Beloved Consuls of Arles". The King writes that he is sending a friend and loyal councilor "of our Privy Council and Master of Common Petitions of our hostelry, the Sire de Maspaunault" to Lanquedoc in order to execute an edict of peace. It is very important "that he may journey in complete safety...to our very dear friend and cousin the Marichal de Dampiville (Montmorency). To this effect we pray and order you that you see to it that you give him all the help, means and assistance he may require from you in order to avoid any hindrance which might be caused by his voyage...." In 1574, 23-year-old Henry III succeeded to the throne when his 24-year-old brother Charles IX died of tuberculosis. He had collaborated with his mother, Catherine de Médicis, in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre on August 24, 1572. Thousands of Huguenots (French Protestants) were slaughtered, with the murders continuing throughout France until October. With his mother's aid, he was elected King of Poland in 1573. His reign as King of France was marked by continuous civil conflicts between Catholics and Huguenots. After his mother's death in 1589, Henry III was murdered by a Jacobin monk, Jacques Clément. Worn, nicked and soiled edges. Tape remnants at right edge on verso (no show through). Pinholes at lower left corner. Folds, vertical fold touches the "nr" in Henry. Overall, fine condition.
