KING SIMEON II
Bulgaria's last King.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Cornelius Greenway, Minister,/Simeon/Rex Bulgaria/Wayne, April 12 1959". B/w, 8x10. © Wide World Photos. Simeon was born in 1937, the son of King Boris III and Queen Giovanna, daughter of Italy's King Vittorio Emanuele III. Bulgaria entered WWII on the side of the Axis and after participating in the invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece, King Boris was able to resist declaring war against Russia. He died at 49 shortly after a stormy interview with Adolf Hitler. Whether his death was caused by heart attack or by assassination is uncertain. He was succeeded on August 28, 1943 by his six-year-old son, Simeon. On September 15, 1946, King Simeon II was deposed and the monarchy was abolished. Lightly creased at corners. Pencil note (unknown hand) and copyright stamp on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
