BENJAMIN N. CARDOZO
The lawyer's lawyer.
Signature: "Benjamin N. Cardozo/March, 1935" as Associate Justice, 5x3 card. Lightly soiled. 2 light paper clip impressions at top blank edge. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by the original postmarked envelope addressed by Cardozo to Mrs. Sarah J. Newland in Hyde Park, Mass. Lightly soiled and stained. Cardozo (1870-1938) was nominated as Associate Justice in 1932 by President Hoover to replace Oliver Wendell Holmes. He served until his death in 1938. In his private law practice, Cardozo quickly gained recognition as a "lawyer's lawyer", preparing briefs and arguments for other attorneys to use in trials. His Supreme Court career paralleled the New Deal's most innovative domestic reform activities and Cardozo voted to uphold most of this legislation. Two items.
