Document 5219 CALVIN COOLIDGE Four days after being elected President, Coolidge sends thanks for support. TLS: "Calvin Coolidge" as President, 1p, 7x9. The White House, Washington, 1924 November 8. To General N.E. Turgeon, Buffalo Athletic Club, Buffalo, N.Y. In full: "I know that I have your best wishes as I have had your hearty and effective support, but it is good, nevertheless, to receive a word from you. I am most grateful to you for this message." Calvin Coolidge, who succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of President Harding, was elected President for a full four-year term fifteen months later, on November 4, 1924. This letter was written to a supporter four days after he defeated Democrat John W. Davis by 15.7 million to 8.4 million popular votes, 382-136 electoral votes and 35-12 states. Progressive Party candidate Robert LaFollette received 4.8 million popular votes and Wisconsin's 13 electoral votes.
