     Document 13869

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
The 23-year-old Assemblyman does not like to miss Monday night sessions because that is when the attendance is small and "bills of a doubtful character are sometimes rushed through".
Early ALS: "Theodore Roosevelt" as New York Assemblyman, 2p, 5½x9, front and verso. Albany, New York, 1882 March 6. To New York Republican leader James S. Lehmair. On pictorial Assembly Chamber stationery, the 23-year-old future 26th U.S. President writes, in full: "Many thanks for your kind, and I fear far too flattering remarks. I was very much pleased with your circular. I do not doubt of our ultimate success, and whatever I can do, I will. Could I not get a list of the members, with their addresses? Then I will from time to time send them bills and documents, so as to keep them interested; do not hesitate to write for anything you wish that I can send you. I shall try to see you next Saturday, in the morning, on my monthly visit to New York. On Monday evening the attendance of the members of the Legislature is small, and on that account bills of a doubtful character are sometimes rushed through; so that I dislike staying down in New York for that night, unless absolutely necessary. With renewed thanks for your kindness." During the 1882 session of the Assembly, Roosevelt was Minority Leader. When the Republicans became the majority, he was the favored candidate for Assembly Speaker but was defeated when deals were made among his opponents. Roosevelt's integrity is evident in this early letter. 3 file holes at left margin of first page, 1 just nicks the "lt". Fine condition.
