     Document 16955

JAMES S. SHERMAN
He still works at the Utica Trust & Deposit Company while serving as VP!
TLS: "J.S. Sherman" as Taft's Vice President, 1p, 5¾x9. On stationery of "The Vice-President's Chamber/Washington", but written from Utica, N.Y., 1909 August 23. To John Shepard, Jr., Ravinehurst, Chapinville, Connecticut. In full: "Your very cordial note of Friday, asking that Mrs. Sherman and I and any friends we care to take in our auto come to you for a visit at once, is received this morning. I would very much enjoy accepting your proffered hospitality but it is impossible at the present time. It may be possible in the latter part of September to drop in on you for a very brief time. Just at present, Mr. Day, of the Trust Company, is in Europe on his annual vacation, and I have to be at the bank the greater portion of every day. I went Saturday to the St. Lawrence River and did not return until this morning at two o'clock this morning, so that I could not telephone you as suggested. We have the liveliest and pleasantest recollections of our former visit to you, and if it is possible some time during the fall, when it is agreeable to you, we should very much like to drop in for a brief time." Sherman, Mayor of Utica in 1884, had served in Congress from 1887-1891 and 1893-1909. He was also President of the Utica Trust & Deposit Co., a job which he evidently kept while he was Vice President as evidenced by this letter. Sherman was the first Republican Vice President to be renominated, but he died on October 30, 1912, six days before the election. Lightly creased, light glue stains at upper right blank margin. Lightly shaded left blank margin. ½x¼-inch paper scuff at lower right blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
