Document 16956 THOMAS R. MARSHALL The Vice President sends thanks for books to a fellow Mason. Scarce ALS: "Thos. R. Marshall" as Wilson's Vice President, 1p, 7x9. The Vice-President's Chamber, Washington, 1918 September 10. To Robinson Locke, Toledo, Ohio. Begins: "My dear Bros. Locke". In full: "I have received and examined the two volumes containing the history of the Jubilee Year of the Scottish Rite for the Northern Jurisdiction prepared and published under your expert eye and heart. I congratulate you upon its beauty and accuracy, and thank you for the discharge of a great duty in such an unselfish and masterly way. Cordially & fraternally." Marshall had been Governor of Indiana before becoming Vice President. He was also a Mason. The Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, formed in 1867, includes the 15 states east of the Mississippi River and north of the Mason-Dixon Line and the Ohio River, including Delaware. The two volumes were probably issued for the 50th anniversary in 1917. Marshall is best remembered for commenting: "What this country needs is a really good five-cent cigar." Light newsprint transference on body of letter. Light horizontal fold touches the tops of the "T" and "M". SEE IF DOCUMENT 16956 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
