SLAVE AUCTION: 1857. ADS: "Walter
Tate", 2p, 7¾x10, front and verso. Probate Court, Wilcox County, Alabama,
circa September 1857. To The Hon. Zo. S. Cook, Judge of said Court. The
report of a public auction of a woman and her two children. In part:
"Under and by virtue of a Commission issued and addressed to the undersigned
by your Honor directing us to sell certain negroes; to wit: Clarissa and her two
children for the purpose of division among the heirs at Law of Mary E. McConnico
dec'd, we, the undersigned Commissioners beg to report that in pursuance of the
terms of said Commission did on Monday the 7th day of September 1857 at 12 o
clock, M. SELL AT PUBLIC OUTCRY before the Court House door of said county the
property described in said Commission to C.J. McConnico, who was the highest
bidder for the same, for the sum of fifteen hundred and sixty five dollars said
sum being the highest bid made at said sale...." Fine condition.
