Document 35037
JOSEPH PULITZER and BERIAH WILKINS.
Signature: "Joseph Pulitzer/New York", 7¼x4¾ album leaf. Also
signed: "Beriah Wilkins/15th Dist. Ohio". In 1878, self-proclaimed
crusader JOSEPH PULITZER (1847-1911) founded the "St. Louis
Post-Dispatch", which was dedicated to eliminating social ills through
sensational exposés. In 1893, he purchased the struggling "New York World",
which became the flagship of his publishing empire. In his 1904 will, he made a
provision for the awarding of Pulitzer Prizes to promote excellence in
journalism, letters and drama and education. Democrat BERIAH WILKINS
served as U.S Representative from Ohio's 15th District from 1885-1887, in
between his terms representing the state's 16th District (1883-1885, 1887-1889).
Wilkins, who became majority owner and Publisher of the "Washington Post" in
1889, acquired the entire stock ownership of the paper in 1894. He served as the
paper's editor until his death in 1905. The "Washington Post" and its staff have
been awarded 37 Pulitzer Prizes from 1936-2002. Fold at blank left margin, which
has 2 binding holes. Fine condition.
