KING MANUEL II of Portugal. Manuscript DS:
"El Rei" ("The King"), 1p, 9½x13½. Real Paco, 1908 June 23. In
Portuguese, not translated. On February 1, 1908, King Carlos I of Portugal and
his son, Crown Prince Luis Filipe, were assassinated. Carlos's second son, at
18, succeeded to the throne as King Manuel II. Manuel's reign was marked by a
succession of ineffectual governments resulting in his overthrow in the
revolution of October 3, 1910, led by the Portuguese Navy. Manuel lived in exile
in England until his death in 1932 at the age of 42. 1-inch diameter embossed
seal to left of signature. Lightly creased. Folds, light horizontal one touches
the lower portion of the letters of signature. ¾-inch separation at blank right
margin at mid-horizontal fold, ¼-inch separation at cross folds. Lightly shaded
at blank left edge.
