Document 44149
PORFIRIO DIAZ. Manuscript LS: "Porfirio
Diaz" as President of Mexico, 1p, 8¼x10½. Mexico City, 1891 March
5. To Senor Y. Sepulveda. In Spanish, not translated. A letter of
condolence on the death of George Hearst, senator from California and the father
of William Randolph Hearst. Hearst died on February 28, just days before
this letter. He had made his fortune in mining and had mines in Mexico, thus his
association with Diaz. He eventually bought the San Francisco "Examiner" which
his son William Randolph had taken management of in 1887. Diaz fought in the
Mexican War (1846-1848), the War of the Reform (1857-1860) in support of Juarez
and in the struggle against the French (1861-1867). He ran unsuccessfully for
President against Juarez in 1871. In 1876, Diaz overthrew President Lerdo de
Tejada and was elected President, serving from 1877-1880 and 1884-1911. His
administrations were marked by peace and material prosperity with foreign
investment but also by dictatorial methods. There was little improvement in the
lives of the peasants and Diaz was finally forced to resign in a revolt led by
Francisco Madero. Diaz died in exile in Paris in 1915. Superb embossed gold
"P" and silver "D" in upper left of stationery which has a
transferred impression at lower left corner. Vertical fold touches the second
"r" in Porfirio. Overall, fine condition.
