Document 36653
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. TLS: "Eleanor
Roosevelt" as First Lady, 1p, 6x9¼. The White House, Washington,
1935 February 8. To Mrs. Glann, acknowledging the receipt "from Mrs.
McGrath the quilt which you and all the other women so generously made for
me...." Fine condition. With typed stamped, postmarked and addressed
White House envelope. Lightly soiled, else fine. MRS. WILLIAM DREW GLANN
was President of the Woman's Democratic Club, Mountain View, California. In the
1930s, there was a new renewal of interest in quilting, enthusiastically
supported by ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. It is interesting that one of the goals
of the WPA was recording and preserving American handicrafts of the past and
keeping weaving, handicrafts and sewing alive. To this end, Eleanor Roosevelt
took an active part in spearheading craft training projects. Women were taught
quilt making, weaving and textile production. By the beginning of WWII, these
programs were either adopted for the war effort or dropped. Two items.
