Document 16549
ANDREW JACKSON and JOHN BRANCH. Partly
Printed DS: "Andrew Jackson" as President and "Jno Branch"
as Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 11x8½. On vellum. Washington, 1829 May
20. In part: "Know Ye, That, reposing special trust and confidence in the
patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities, of R.H.L. Paterson, I do appoint him
a Midshipman in the Navy of the United States to bear date 1st October 1827. He
is, therefore, carefully and diligently to discharge the duties of a Midshipman
by doing and performing all manner of things thereunto belonging...."
Also signed: "R.B. Maury" as Registrar. In 1829, the
U.S. Navy consisted of 4,869 men (555 officers and 4,314 enlisted personnel) and
was largely involved in peacetime cruising. Midshipmen were basically "naval
cadets" serving under ships' officers to learn to qualify as commanding officers
themselves. John Branch, a former U.S. Senator from North Carolina, was
Jackson's Secretary of the Navy from March 9, 1829, until his resignation on May
12, 1831 upon his election to Congress. During his term in the cabinet, the Navy
continued to work on designs for practical submarines. The United States
purchased Florida from Spain in 1819 and President Monroe appointed Jackson the
first provisional Governor of the new territory of Florida. He served from March
10 to July 18, 1821. President Tyler appointed Branch Governor of the Territory
of Florida and he served from June 21, 1844 to March 3, 1845, when Florida
entered the Union as the 27th state. Vertical fold through "d" of Andrew.
Vertical fold touches "r" in Branch. Pinhead-size holes and slight separations
at right vertical fold affect 11 words. Pinhead-size holes at left vertical
folds are of marginal appearance. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine
condition.
