CALVIN COOLIDGE. TLS: "Calvin
Coolidge", 1p, 8½x11. Northampton, Mass., 1930 May 26. To Rufus N.
Hemenway, New Britain, Conn. The former President is "obliged to be in
Springfield on Decoration Day so I cannot go to Vermont." Coolidge was born
on Independence Day, 1872, in Plymouth, Vermont and grew up there. Three years
after the Civil War ended, General John A. Logan, in his General Order No. 11,
ordered that May 30, 1868 be "designated for the purpose of strewing with
flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of
their country during the late rebellion", establishing the first Decoration Day,
now called Memorial Day. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "Co"
in Coolidge. Fine condition.
