CALVIN COOLIDGE and CHARLES EVANS HUGHES.
Partly Printed DS: "Calvin Coolidge" as President and
"Charles E. Hughes" as Secretary of State, 1p, 23x19¼.
Washington, 1924 December 20. In part: "To Samuel Sokobin, of
New Jersey, Greeting: Reposing special trust and confidence in your Integrity,
Prudence and Ability, I have nominated and, by and with the advice and consent
of the Senate, do appoint you a Foreign Service Officer of Class six of
the United States of America...." CHARLES EVANS HUGHES, Governor of New
York (1907-1910), Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1910-1916) and
unsuccessful Republican candidate for President (lost to Wilson in 1916), was
Harding's and Coolidge's Secretary of State from 1921-1925. He later served
as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1930-1941. Large 3½-inch
diameter embossed white seal affixed at lower left. Creased at blank margins,
else in fine condition.
